What is the ECA?

The Drewitt Group is a member of the Electrical Contractors’ Association, also known as the ECA. But you are probably thinking, what is the ECA?

The ECA was founded in 1901, but was officially incorporated on 19th April 1916. It intends to represent the interests of contractors who design, install, inspect, test and maintain electrical equipment and services. It is the main trade association for companies carrying out this type of work in and around England, Northern Island and Wales.

In 2016, the ECA had approximately 2,800 registered members. This membership is comprised of companies who employ around 100,000 staff from within the UK.

The ECA has three main goals:

  • To provide support services to its members. These include advice on: technical issues, employment, health and safety, contracts, energy solutions and skills.
  • To work with regulatory bodies, government and other stakeholders and thought leaders to build an efficient and sustainable industry, based on high standards of training and practice.
  • To form strategic relationships with those who specify electrical and other engineering services to enhance the profile and promote the use of Registered Members of all sizes.

The organisation played a large part in the roll out of electricity to most houses in the 1920s and 1930s. Before the ECA stepped in, electricity was distributed at different voltages and frequencies.

Today, the ECA has expanded to cover not only electrical engineering, but also fire and security, datacomms, energy solutions, building management systems, audiovisual, and temporary installations as well as an array of other services.

As we operate under the ECA, you can be sure that the work we carry out is in line with the industry’s best practices and carried out by highly qualified professionals.
