Drewlec has been part of the Drewitt Group since 1964 providing general electrical services to commercial clients for 50 years. Since the 1980’s we have also been developing expertise in installing and maintaining fire alarm and emergency lighting systems and we are an Autronica approved contractor.

Fire Alarms & Emergency Lighting

Legal Requirements

Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which came into force in 2006, requires the "responsible person" for each building to carry out or commission from a competent person a Fire Risk Assessment to ensure that the general fire precautions within a particular building are fit for the purposes that that building is being currently put to.

Whether or not a Fire Alarm System is installed in your premises it is a legal requirement that a Risk Assessment is undertaken.

When you have assessed Fire Safety and carried out a Risk Assessment in your building you may wish to implement precautionary measures and either install (or upgrade an existing) a Fire Alarm System.


Drewlec Ltd has the expertise to design, install and commission a new fire alarm system and associated emergency lighting for your building. We use a wide variety of manufacturers and can tailor a solution for your particular needs and budget.

All Drewlec’s installations comply with BS 5839, 2013. This regulates the design, installation and maintenance of Fire Detection & Fire alarms.

Continued Compliance & Servicing

BS 5839 places a responsibility on the “Duty Holder” of the building to ensure that the fire alarm and emergency lighting system is properly tested, serviced and maintained.

Minimum test & check frequencies required by BS 5839 are:

  • Daily
  • Weekly
  • Half yearly
  • Annually

Each system has specific requirements and checks should be recorded where necessary in a Fire Safety Log Book.

We maintain systems on approximately 300 sites throughout Dorset & Hampshire. Drewlec is accredited by BAFE and we can organise a servicing regime for your new or existing fire alarm & emergency light system within our servicing department. Our dedicated Service Co-Ordinator will pre-arrange service dates with you well in advance. Following our engineers visit any repairs to the system are notified to clients, carried out and the certificate is issued.

General Electrical Services

As well as Fire Alarm systems Drewlec can provide general electrical services to suit all your requirements.

Our electrical engineers are all qualified to 17th Edition Electrical Wiring Regulation standards so you can be assured that any work carried out will be to the most up to date requirements.

We can undertake amongst other things :

  • Complete and partial rewires to buildings
  • Full & partial installations eg. additional lighting, sockets and other electrical outlets
  • Advice on and installation of energy saving lighting & other products
  • Fault finding and repairs
  • PAT testing
  • Fixed wiring testing

Repairs & Fault Finding

We understand that from time to time systems have problems and fail and obviously fault finding and repairs need to be carried out as soon as possible. A qualified service engineer is always available to deal with emergency problems so that your system can be operational again as soon as practically possible. For regularly maintained systems and depending upon the problem we can also offer telephone support where appropriate.
